About
Out of war, friendship and southern heritage come the sounds of Dem Southernfolkz. In 2001, Thomas Benjamin ("Benjamin") and Rudy Jackson (“Kinfolk Jack”) met as soldiers at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. After sharing similar passions for music, they began a journey which led to the formation of Dem Southernfolkz (“DSFZ”). Focused on producing and promoting quality music, DSFZ set to blend hip-hop culture with the emotion of soul music. Motivated by a mutual respect, Benjamin and Kinfolk Jack quickly began making music on a daily basis. It was not long before Dem Southernfolkz' found themselves on their first international tour. Ben and Jack were both deployed to Iraq. However, their military duty was not enough to prevent DSFZ from making music. While at war, the duo would constantly exchange beats and lyrics through e-mail.
Upon returning to Dallas in 2005, the duo met Nathan Wright IV (“Alridge”) and quickly realized he had a similar ear and integrity for music that brought Benjamin and Kinfolk Jack together years before. After many overtures by the duo, Alridge finally agreed to join DSFZ. Saturday's hesitation was never a question of creative synergy, but more so an internal debate on stepping into the music industry.
Soon after DSFZ added its third member, Ben was called for his second tour in Iraq. Dejavu for Benjamin and Kinfolk Jack , again the group exchanged creative ideas and music via email and ichat. The music that was eventually created is “The Message”, DSFZ’ debut album. “The Message” offers personal insight into their world influenced by the streets, soul and spirit of the south. Just spend 10 minutes with the group and you will understand both their stance on music and philosophy of life; And they’re not afraid to share it with the world!
