Q1: Which web browsers does Binge support?
A: Binge supports the current (most recent) versions of all major web browsers. Specifically, Binge supports Safari, Firefox, and Chrome on Mac OS X; and Safari, Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer on Microsoft Windows. Binge also works on iOS devices like iPhones and iPads, and other browser versions and operating systems that it is not specicifcally tested on. Below is the list of platforms we regularly test on.
| Operating System | Browser | Video Player, Format |
| Mac OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard) | Safari 5.0.3 | HTML5 built-in, H.264 .mp4 |
| Firefox 3.6.13 (deprecated) | HTML5 built-in, Ogg Theora .ogv | |
| Firefox 4 | HTML5 built-in, Ogg Theora .ogv | |
| Google Chrome 7.0.517.41 | HTML5 built-in, H.264 .mp4 | |
| Microsoft Windows 7 | Safari 5.0 | HTML5 built-in, H.264 .mp4 |
| Firefox 3.6.8 (deprecated) | HTML5 built-in, Ogg Theora .ogv | |
| Google Chrome 7.0.517.44 | HTML5 built-in, H.264 .mp4 | |
| Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 (deprecated) | Requires QuickTime Plug-in, H.264 .mp4 | |
| Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 | HTML5 built-in, H.264 .mp4 | |
| iOS 4.2.1 (iPhone) | Mobile Safari | HTML5 built-in, H.264 .mp4 |
| iOS 4.2.1 (iPad) | Mobile Safari | HTML5 built-in, H.264 .mp4 |
Q2: Why isn't there a "Full Screen" button for videos on Google Chrome?
A: Google Chrome has chosen not to support resizing or moving of its browser window. It is the only major browser that does not follow this convention. Because of this, Binge does not display a "Full Screen" button when viewed with the Google Chrome browser. As a partial work around, you can expand your browser window to fill your whole screen, then use the "Zoom" feature. For more technical information on this Google Chrome bug, you can read chromium MR 1091.
Q3: Why doesn't the "Full Screen" button for videos always work on Safari?
A: If you have a single tab in the Safari browser window you are using to view Binge, the "Full Screen" button will work properly as expected. However, if you have more than one tab open in the current Safari browser window, clicking on "Full Screen" will just zoom the video to the full size of your current browser window. This is because Safari does not allow website to change the size of your browser window when there is more than one tab. Other browsers, like Firefox 4, do not have this restriction, and there the "Full Screen" button always works as expected, even when there are multiple tabs.
Q4: Is there anything I can do to make my videos upload more quickly and efficiently?
A: The time it takes to upload a video is largely dependent on how fast of an upstream Internet connection you have. Many cable and DSL services will provide you with fast download speeds, but much slower (often only 1/10th the speed or less) download speeds.
However, there are a couple things you can do that could make your uploads several times faster for a given Internet connection.
One is to upload your video in 480p resolution. This would make the file several times smaller than a 1080p upload. While we may someday display videos on the site in 1080p, for now, we only provide resolutions up through 480p. We don't recommend uploading in resolutions smaller than 480p, though.
Another is to encode your video as an .mp4 file using H.264 encoding. This will provide the best quality versus size of any common file format, and it has the addede advantage of not needing to be re-encoded on our end for the highest resoution version of the video, so once it is uploaded, it will also take less time afterwards to be available on Binge.
We would also suggest that you take advantage of the option to specify a channel for your video to go to before you upload the video. That way, as soon as the video has been uploaded and re-encoded on our site, it will automatically show up in your channel.
